Millau is located in the heart of natural and historic sites the likes of which cannot be seen elsewhere.
The gorges of the Tarn and the Jonte are one of the most remarkable natural sites in France. Millau is the perfect departure point for walking in the gorges or on the causses (limestone plateaus) several hundred metres above the two rivers.
The Cistercian abbey of Sylvanès is a magical place of peace and serenity. Located 70 km from Millau, the building has become an unmissable destination for lovers of art, culture and religious music. Every summer a festival of sacred music is held there.
Conques, to the north of the Aveyron, has a wealth of vestiges of the Middle Ages. The Romanesque abbey and its unique stained glass windows, the tympanum of the Last Judgement, the ruins of the cloisters have come down the centuries intact. Conques also houses the European Centre of Medieval Art and Civilisation.
On the Larzac, la Couvertoirade still reflects the power of the Order of Knights of the Templars in the Middle Ages. It is extremely well preserved. Other sites that once belonged to the Templars and Hospitaliers (La Cavalerie, Sainte-Eulalie-du-Cernon, etc.) can also be visited. To find out more, just visit the site du Conservatoire Larzac Templier et Hospitalier.
2 km south of Millau, the site de la Gaufresenque has the ruins of a Gallo-Roman village. Hundreds of craftsmen made their pottery there, to be exported throughout the entire Roman Empire. You can see the potters' workshops, the clay stores, potteries, ovens and the ruins of dwelling places.
