One single tollgate
The tollgate of the Millau viaduct is 4 km to the north of the construction. There is only one for the two directions and includes 18 lanes. One half is for passengers travelling north to south, and the other half for the crossing in the other direction. A car park with toilets is available on each side of the tollgate.
All payment methods are accepted: cash, credit cards, various direct debit cards, remote payment system, etc. A permanent secure collection system of the money limits the risks of attacks or muggings. In addition, there is a traffic police station in the management building adjoining the tollgate.
The comfort and safety of the tollbooth operators was given particular attention. An underground corridor allows them to reach their workstation directly. All danger linked to crossing the motorway is thus eliminated. Slightly over-pressured, the booths are designed so that no exhaust gases can penetrate inside and bother the operators.
