On 16 December 2004, the Millau viaduct opened to traffic. The usual traffic jams between Aguessac and la Cavalerie were now a thing of the past. Culminating at 343 metres above the Tarn valley, the viaduct made the final missing link on the A75. This motorway – the Méridienne – links Clermont-Ferrand to Béziers in 340 km. Nowadays, with the viaduct, the A10-A71-A75 route represents the shortest journey between Paris and Perpignan: 60 km less than going through Lyon, or half an hour's drive less. Not to mention the time saved due to no tailbacks in Millau. In the heavy congestion of the beginning of the holiday period, you can save several precious hours!
And there is considerably less cost. The A75 is toll-free all the way. Only the crossing of the Millau viaduct will be subject to a toll. So on the whole Paris-Perpignan route, the difference in cost for light vehicles is around €15 better on the A71-A75 compared to the A6-A7-A9 route.
Far from the overcrowded motorways, the A75 and the Millau viaduct form an integral part of their environment. They pass through magnificent scenery with low mountains and the traffic conditions are ideal.
